There are plenty of television shows on today that get adults and children, including those right here in Medford, excited about the different styles of dance. One form, in particular, the tango, has been popular for years, and the notion still holds true today. Originally, shaking a leg in this fashion was personal and intimate between the two partners. These emotions are still a focal point of modern Argentine tango.

Learn more about the Argentine Tango’s history, and why it’s the right dance for your child to learn.

History of the Argentine Tango

The exact date in which Argentine Tango came to be is unknown, but it is believed that it was created sometime in the mid-1800s. During that time, Buenos Aires was full of immigrants from Africa and Europe. These settlers were quite lonely as they did not have a real entertainment outlet. Due to the various cultures meshing together in a single location, a new type of music became born known as "Tango." Soon after, a social dance was created, which people know as Argentine Tango today.

The music with this dance is usually romantic and melodic. A bandoneon, which is similar to an accordion, is the primary instrument musicians use to play a 4/4 time signature. Then, dancers typically count the notes in 8's to keep track of the basic steps. Unlike with other styles, the leader takes the first step backward with his or her right foot. Plus, the form is different from others as the leader holds the partner in a tighter embrace, and both dancers rest their heads together.

How the Dance Relates to Kids

The Argentine Tango is an intimate dance that demands clear communication between dance partners. Children can learn to work together in groups, and as partners to sharpen their tango skills. Your child will learn commitment, teamwork, dance techniques, and they’ll make long-lasting friendships at the same time.
